이 책은 Mitch가 Morrie 교수님의 알츠하이머 병 소식을 알고 찾아가서 죽기 전까지 Morrie교수님에게 들었던 인생 수업, 그리고 Mitch가 대학시절 Morrie 교수님 사회학 수업에서 배웠던 감동적인 수업에 대한 이야기이다.

[해석]

The subject was The Meaning Life. 이 주제는 의미있는 인생이었다.

It was taught from experience. 그것은 경험으로부터 배운 것이다.

Many topics were covered, 많은 주제가 다루어졌는데

including love, work, community, family, aging, forgiveness, and finally death.

사랑, 직업, 공동체, 가족, 나이듬, 용서, 그리고 마지막으로 죽음을 포함한...

The last lecture was brief, only a few words. 마지막 강의은 간단히, 오직 몇 마디뿐이었다.

you were expected to produce one long paper on what was learned.

배운 내용이 긴 종이 한 장에 제작될 것을 기대할 것이다.

That paper is presented here. 그 종이가 여기 있다.

The last class of my old professor’s life had only one student.

나의 노교수님 인생의 마지막 수업에서는 오직 한명의 학생만 있었다.

I was the student. 내가 그 학생이었다.

 

 

교수님의 루게릭병이 어떻게 진행되는 지에 대한 언급이 잠시 있어서 발췌해보았다.

 

『He backed the car out of the garage one morning and could barely push the brakes. That was the end of his driving. He kept tripping, so he purchased a cane. That was the end of his walking free. He went for his regular swim at the YMCA, but found he could no longer undress himself. So he hired his first home care worker—a theology student named Tony—who helped him in and out of the pool, and in and out of his bathing suit. [해석]

He backed the car out of the garage one morning 그가 어느 날 아침 차고에서 차를 뒤로 뺐는데

and could barely push the brakes. 그는 거의 브레이크를 밟을 수가 없었다.

That was the end of his driving. 그것이 그의 운전의 끝이었다.

He kept tripping, 그는 계속 넘어졌다.

so he purchased a cane. 그래서 지팡이를 샀다.

That was the end of his walking free. 그것이 그가 자유롭게 걸어가는 것의 끝이었다.

하지만 모리 교수님이 이 병을 어떻게 이겨낼 것인지 결심하는 부분이 아름답다.

『Do I wither up and disappear, or do I make the best of my time left? he had asked himself. He would not wither. He would not be ashamed of dying.』「pg.10에서 발췌」

 

[해석]

Do I wither up and disappear, 나는 시들어 사라질까,

or do I make the best of my time left? 아니면 남은 시간을 최대한 활용할까?

he had asked himself. 그는 자신에게 물었다.

He would not wither. 그는 시들지 않을 것이다.

He would not be ashamed of dying. 그는 죽는 것을 부끄러워하지 않을 것이다.
